The Water Woman From Down Under

Interesting post at Hugg recently about an Australian woman who seems to have a real knack for water conservation.

According to the original article (link to follow), 78 year old Val Yule uses only a fraction of the amount of water that most people in her region use (less than 1/10th between August and October ’06).

I’m always interested to hear about different ways to conserve water at home, but I think what really drew me to this article was the individual herself. Based on some of the quotes provided, Val Yule definitely sounds like someone who, as Thoreau might say, ‘marches to the beat of a different drummer’ – she is an original, and not afraid to let people know it!

Here are some blurbs:

“Everyone likes to say, ‘You can’t do this, you can’t do that’,” Ms Yule said. “Well, I like to say, what can we do that’s better?”

Hear, hear!

Even her trips to the toilet are eco-friendly, although she declined to spell out the specifics.

“I have a system, but I won’t go into details,” she said. “People aren’t ready for that yet.”

Hehe. I’d be interested to learn about her eco-friendly toilet system, but can see what she is saying about people not being ready (although I would argue that some are in fact ready).

The article contains some interesting tips for conserving water, and Val even has her own website, Australian Oz Ideas, where she shares “alternative ideas about everything”. It looks to be an interesting site covering a wide range of topics (including her water-saving methods), although not quite as environmentally-focused as I thought it might be. Definitely still worth a visit though.

[UPDATE]I just came across an EXCELLENT article at Treehugger all about water conservation – be sure to check it out if this is a topic of interest to you.

You may be right about her site still being under construction, but I\’m not entirely sure. When [Yahoo] searching for the site, I came across the following

OzIdeas.com — the one under construction
and
http://home.vicnet.net.au/~ozideas/
– which appears to have some green content. It also has commentary in a whole bunch of other categories, some of which is rather interesting :-) .

Cheers from J … and thanks for posting another excellent link.

Thanks very much for the heads-up J!
You are definitely correct – after a little digging around on the second site you mentioned, I\’m positive it is in fact Val\’s site (ie. it\’s NOT OzIdeas.com).
I have altered my post accordingly.
Cheers
