‘Old Faithful’ – My Milk Carton Compost Companion

Milk Carton Compost Companion

Who says you need a fancy kitchen scrap carrier for compost? I sure don’t! I’ve been more than happy with my ‘Old Faithful’ for quite some time now. She’s looking a little rough around the edges these days (having some digital camera issues – stay tuned for an actual photo), but she stll serves her purpose admirably!

Empty milk or juice cartons make excellent kitchen scrap holders since they are an ideal size (by the time they are full, the scraps should be ‘ripe and ready’ for your composter!), lightweight, and of course FREE!!!

As with any kitchen scrap container for composting there are some guidelines you might want to follow so as to avoid any serious domestic unrest due to the foul odors wafting up from under your sink! The single most important thing to do before adding any scraps is to make yourself a ‘false bottom’. I personally love to use shredded egg cartons since this cardboard is very absorbent. I typically add a 2-3 inch layer (will be compressed as waste is added). This alone will do wonders for keeping your scraps from going anaerobic (aka STINKY!) on you!

Its also not a bad idea to add some paper/cardboard in with your scraps as you fill up your container since this will help to balance the typically-N-rich food scraps in preparation for addition to your compost pile/container!

So there you have it! Why buy a container, when you can make a ‘milk carton compost companion’ for free?! :-)
