Composter’s Log - The Iceman Cameth

And he frozeth my bineth!

Ok, so I’ve had my fun with all the stardate stuff and will be omitting such nerdy pleasures from here on out. Hope our trekkie (or is it trekker?) compadres will forgive me!

Inside Lid of Bin

As far as compost bin news goes, my title (and before/after picture) should tell you that our winterish conditions have continued since my last post. In fact we had a pretty serious ice storm (freezing rain etc) the other day and as a result it took some time and effort to access my bin’s ‘innards’ this afternoon.

Sadly, I’ve been neglecting the bin somewhat as of late, and it shows! The inside surface of the lid is quite frosty (see right-hand pic) and temperatures inside the composting mass have dropped. The warmest zone (I could find) was hovering just shy of 20 degrees C (68 F), while most of the bin seems to be in the 10 degree C (50 F) range.

To add insult to injury, there were quite a few burrows in the upper shredded-paper layer along with some heaping mouse turds (see our flickr collection if you feel like getting up close and personal with a mouse muffin)!

Round #2 definitely goes to the ‘iceman’, but this winter composter is by no means down for the count!

The fun is only just getting started and I’ve got some pretty ’sweet moves’ of my own planned, so do stay tuned.
