Grocery Walks - Good For Our Health & Soul

My wife and I have been trying to form a new habit. For the last week or so we have been getting out for a long walk almost daily.

We live in a small town yet haven’t really been taking advantage of the fact that everything is within reasonable walking distance. I must say, the experience has truly been eye-opening for both of us.

Our main motivation originally was simply a desire to be more active, but the walks already seem to have evolved into so much more than a calorie-burning endeavour.

It’s amazing how different your perspective is while travelling on foot - it’s as though a whole new world has opened up for us. We now have the time to truly take in and appreciate the sights and sounds of our little community - the things we wouldn’t typically notice while whizzing by in our cars.

We’ve lived here for a year and a half yet we find ourselves surprised by the number of interesting stores and businesses in town that we did not even realize existed, such as the tiny Mexican grocery store across the street from the KFC.

I think even the simple act of changing our normal schedule and getting out of the house for some fresh air has been really beneficial. It already seems to be having a positive effect on our mood and general well being.

Another great advantage of our walks is that we now can pop by the grocery store (which is on our route) anytime we want. No more wondering what we should make for dinner, or settling for certain (boring) meals based simply on what’s in the house - now we are only limited by our culinary creativity! I guarantee we’ll be eating less packaged & processed ‘convenience food’ from now on and I’m sure our bodies will rejoice.

Cold winter winds will undoubtedly be sweeping through our little town before too long and I imagine it will become more and more challenging to pry ourselves away from the comfort of our warm home. Nevertheless, I’m optimistic that we are close to creating a new habit for ourselves - a ritual that no amount of snow and cold will stall.
