Battery Recycling

battery recycling

Yet another interesting Ideal Bite Newsletter this morning - all about batteries!

I definitely welcomed the information, since this is something I’ve been meaning to learn more about. I have a LOT of dead batteries lying around and have been meaning to find out how to deal with them responsibly.

Just as an aside - one thing you may start to pick up on with our posts here at EcoSherpa is the fact that Steve and I are pretty normal, average citizens. We are not yet Eco-Heroes by any stretch of the imagination. Calling ourselves Sherpas does not imply that we know everything there is to know about sustainable living. On the contrary in fact - a BIG reason for starting this project was the fact that we really want to make major changes in our own lives. It is our hope that by via our research and the sharing of our findings, we can help inspire many other ‘average’ people to start taking more eco-action in their own lives.

Anyway, back to battery recycling…:-)

One of the cool resources mentioned in the newsletter was Call2Recycle (a ‘Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation’ program). If you live in North America and have rechargeable batteries or cell phones that need to be recycled, simple enter your location info and the distance you are willing to travel, and it will provide a list a drop-off locations. I tested it out using only my postal code and the minimum distance (5 miles or less) and was rewarded with three possible locations - pretty impressive considering the fact that I live in a small town.
Test it out for yourself here

Another REALLY cool idea mentioned is the Big Green Box. Its basically a big green box (duh!) that you can fill with up to 43 lbs of waste batteries and electronics, then take to the post office to drop off. The postage is paid (shipped via UPS). I think it is only available for those living in the US, but it’s still pretty cool.
Its not exactly cheap ($58), BUT would make a cool gift for someone you think might need a little help in that department, or for a business that uses a lot of batteries!
