Solar Panels Made From Blueberries? Yummm!

You know I can’t resist an interesting eco-headline, and this is certainly no exception. I was actually going to call this post “Blueberry Flavoured Solar Panels”, but I figured that would be taking things a little too far!

Anywho…

Came across an interesting story at coolest-gadgets.com. Apparently some Italian scientists have developed solar panels using a pigment found in blueberries, thus eliminating the need for silicon. The result is a much cheaper solar panel with greater flexibility (a solar ‘fruit roll-up’?). Sounds very cool!

Here is an exerpt:

The technology is based on the idea that organic semiconductors could reduce drastically the cost of production of the solar panels, which is one of the main drawbacks of this alternative energy source. It is estimated that the standard solar panels manufactured with silicon have an efficiency rate of 15%, meaning that the electric energy produced is 15% of the solar energy captured. The solar panels using only organic materials, like the pigments of blueberries, are achieving an efficiency of 4% in the laboratories, but the hybrid panels created with a mixture of organic and inorganic material are already presenting efficiency rates of 10% or more, close to what current commercial panels offer.

The usage of organic material in the production of solar panels could accelerate the pace at which the cost per watt is decreasing. The retail cost of a photovoltaic system would cost as much as $10 per watt in 1990 while in 2005 it was costing somewhere around $5. This alternative energy source has spread around the world mainly in regions that could not rely on traditional sources or in places that presented strong governmental incentives. If the technology keeps evolving steadily, though, it looks like that it will start competing directly with standard energy sources.

Mmm… You had to mention blueberries, didn’t you. Despite my selfish reservations about test-tube wielding scientists beating me to the best blueberry patches, it sounds like a good idea.

Although, blueberry-solar technology might not be quite as close behind convention-solar as you thought:

Hey Craig,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the matter.
I caught that article as well (breaking the 40% efficiency barrier) - very cool! I don’t however think this new blueberry solar technology is necessarily trying to beat out conventional solar in terms of efficiency. My impression (simply based only the short article, I admit) is that this new technology could be much cheaper and may result in solar panels that can be used in situations where perhaps conventional panels could not.

I’m personally all for a wide variety of different technologies being explored. Getting 10% efficiency is better than having no options for solar power the way I see it.

Regardless, it will be really interesting to see how things progress on both fronts in the next few years.

Thanks again

B.

Indeed - right you are. Although, with biofuel people threatening to utilise every available piece of land for fueling our vehicles, I can’t help but feel a little protective of my blueberries! :o)

BY USING BLUEBERRYS OR AN ORGANIC SOURCE IS REDUCING OUR DEPENDENCY ON FOSSIL OIL AND MAKING A CLEANER EARTH FOR THE FUTURE.
