Toronto Solar Research Facility

Sheesh, I can’t seem to pry myself away from the green news blurbs today! This one sounds really interesting and I haven’t heard anything about it (until now).

TORONTO (CP) _ A site has been chosen on the Toronto waterfront for what is being billed as Canada‘s largest solar research facility.

The solar park at the Portlands Energy Centre will create between 500 kilowatts and one megawatt and harvest enough solar energy to power up to 1,000 homes.

University of Toronto students and staff at ARISE Technologies will use the facility to conduct research on renewable energy systems and technologies.

The university, ARISE and the Portlands Energy Centre are joining forces for the project, which Ontario Energy Minister Dwight Duncan says will establish Toronto and Ontario as a “world leader in solar energy research and development.‘‘

Later this year, ARISE will issue a community based share offering that will allow residents to participate in the project.

The project is expected to be installed in late 2008 or early 2009.

Unfortunately this article seems full of promise but empty of content. Installation in early 2009? Financial methods not yet decided? I hate to be cynical, but this story is fairly typical of ‘press releases’ we have seen lately, along with SkyPower’s ’50MW of solar’ to be installed in 3 year’s time… In 3 year’s time the price of solar should have come down, making these projects viable, but for now they seem like a thinly veiled effort to raise stock prices or just gain media attention.
The only solar park that I know of in Ontario that is actually moving towards construction (in 2007) is Sunpark, in Guelph. Ironically this is just a stone’s throw away from ARISE Technologies office in Waterloo, and they’re not listed as a participant… Hmm….

Hi Shania,
I must admit to being pretty shocked when I came across the release. It sounds as though you are much more of a seasoned solar veteran than I, so I definitely appreciate you chiming in (and btw, there is nothing wrong with a little cynicism).

Just to show how wet behind the ears I am when it comes to solar power, I had NO idea that there was even a Solar Power company (ARISE) located in Waterloo (my hometown, and 15 minutes from where I currently reside).

Thanks for clueing me in!

On a (somewhat) related note, the Sunpark project lists every company that has contributed to the project on its web site at http://www.sunpark.ca

You will see a whole host of companies that are prepared to ‘walk the walk’ and not just blow hot air when it comes to being environmentally responsible. I will make sure the next time my insurance is up for renewal that I will be contacting the insurance company listed as a sponsor… At least I know some of the money will be used to promote solar power in the future.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing that, Shania!
