Condiment Craziness

I started writing this post yesterday, but then got completely sidelined. Saturday is typically our day to clean the house and get organized, and yesterday was particularly busy.
One of the tasks I decided to take on was the cleaning out of old bottles from the fridge - you know, the not-quite-empty salad dressing, ketchup, mustard and mystery sauce bottles (don’t forget the pickle jar with one teeny tiny baby dill - the one you bought in 2003).
It’s a task most of us dread I’m sure, although I would imagine many people make things easier by simply tossing everything in the trash. Well needless to say I’m working hard to distance myself from that sort of mentality.
What a depressing experience - but it was yet another great opportunity for a healthy dose of perspective - and it inspired me to write this post.

Standing there, staring at all the containers on my counter, I wondered what on earth led me to purchase all this stuff? What was I thinking?!
I came to the conclusion that I wasn’t thinking at all, and that’s where the problem lies.
I have to commend my wife though - she always scolds me when I come home with a new variety of salad dressing (I’m a real sucker for new varieties) or when I suggest we buy one when we’re out shopping together.
What’s interesting about my bottle-cleaning session yesterday is that even though I was doing the ‘responsible’ thing by recycling everything, it didn’t make me feel responsible AT ALL! Here I was using up lots of hot water and dish soap in an effort to clean out bottles, many of which I shouldn’t have purchased in the first place.
The experience reminded me that I’ve been meaning to try making salad dressings/sauces at home - definitely will be thinking a lot more about this idea in the near future. Speaking of which, if anyone has some interesting recipes I’d love to hear about them!
Anyway that’s enough aimless rambling for one post.
