I Want Spring to Arrive!

Southern Ontario’s luck has run out! Winter has finally arrived! I just came in from shoveling my sidewalk and driveway. By the way the snow is falling, I will be back outside in a few hours doing it all over again. I can’t really complain about our weather, we were spoiled in December and part of January. Besides, the snow gives me an excuse to get away from the computer and get a little exercise at the same time.
As I was shoveling and covering up my flower beds with the white powdery stuff, I started to think about spring and what will I plant in my beds this coming growing season. I am anxious for spring’s arrival as I have a list a mile long of things I want to do around my property, (a new deck, new flower beds, a new green house, and patio planters). I am excited just thinking about it.
Since my yard is covered in snow, all of my outdoor projects will need to wait. I have decided to get through the winter blahhs with a little garden planning. Every year I tell myself that I am going to start my veggies and herbs from seed and I wait too long to get started and end up buying plugs from a nursery. I have put my foot down and I have started to source seed suppliers.
The other night I went on a search for organic seed suppliers and came across a fantastic source, Seeds of Diversity . The website is a great place to find information on Canada’s Heritage Seed Program. Seeds of Diversity, offers a membership that provides members with a subscription to their magazine and their annual Seed Exchange Directory (over 1800 seed varieties) that members share with each other. In an upcoming post, I will write more about Seeds of Diversity. What I want to focus on is their resource section.
The resource list is fantastic! The directory offers listings for both Canada and the US. If you are looking for heirloom varieties this is the place to start your search. I have spent that last five hours filling out catalogues and planning my garden. If you are thinking of starting your garden from scratch, I highly recommend the Seeds of Diversity website.
Stay tuned to the blog as I will be writing regular posts on my seed planting adventures.
