Last year I wrote a post announcing a funding/support opportunity for college students interested in starting some sort of (on-campus)environmentally/socially responsible venture.
Well, I received an e-mail yesterday from Michael Del Ponte, President and CEO of Conscious Lifestyle, letting me know that the opportunity was once again available.
Here is an info blurb he included in the e-mail:

Submit an application for the chance to win:
* Up to $1,000 in start-up funding
* Web space on consciouslifestyle.org

Back in August I wrote a post announcing that Patti ‘Garden Girl’ Moreno was once again back on the green gardening scene (she seemed to be MIA for a number of months), and was partnering with Farmers Almanac for future editions of her Urban Sustainable Living video series.
At the time, her website was looking a wee bit rough around the edges, but she was in the process of planning out a completely new design (which looked very promising).
Long story short, her new website has now officially launched – and I must say it looks AWESOME! Way to go, Patti! I highly recommend that you pop by and check it out: http://www.gardengirltv.com. There is a link down at the bottom that will take you to a preview of her upcoming series on the Farmer’s Almanac site – definitely should be interesting! I also highly recommend signing up for her newsletter – aside from providing updates on her progress, Patti always includes interesting blurbs about her urban mini-farm and what she is up to in general.

I mentioned last month (ie in one of my most-recent posts! lol) that main coverage of my Winter Composting Extravaganza is going to occur on a ‘secret‘ website – which of course was only ‘secret’ because I wasn’t ready to make it public yet. I’ve been slowly working on it in fits and spurts for months now, and I’ve finally decided to share it. There is still considerable work to be done, but I’ve decided to just ‘let go’ and launch it as-is (which will provide me with lots more incentive to make time for it from here on out).
In case you haven’t figured it out, the site is called Compost Guy – not unbelievably original, but still a very fitting title given my passion for the topic.
I decided to launch the site in the hopes of reaching a much broader audience than is possible via Red Worm Composting, yet a somewhat more targetted audience than our readers (or former readers, haha) here at EcoSherpa. I’m going to be talking about a lot more than just composting of course, but there are plenty of eco topics I won’t be discussing. I’m confident that the three blogs will tie together very well, and I certainly don’t mean to imply that I am abandoning any of my current projects.
If you happen to be keenly interested in topics such as composting, aquaponics, eco-gardening etc, and have enjoyed my coverage of these topics here, then perhaps you’ll want to add Compost Guy to your feedreader as well (but no pressure – haha!).
That being said, Steve and I will still be talking about ALL aspects of sustainable living here at EcoSherpa.
Anyway, I won’t say more than that for now, but rest assured you hear more about it in coming months!

Note to self: STOP saying that EcoSherpa is going to be a lot more active “soon”!
Sheesh! You’d think I’d have learned my lesson by now. It seems as though every time I apologize for our inactivity on the blog and promise things will be getting better, we actually head in the opposite direction!
Oh well – hopefully you know I only say those things because I care!
Anyway, I’m not going to bother informing you that there are some new blog posts coming your way very soon. Nor will I mention that you’ll be very likely learning about my new site today. There is probably no point in providing you with an update on my winter composting experiment either!
Ok, I’ll stop being annoying now! Let’s get on with it!!

Just a quick note. I’m a member of the Ontario Environment Network e-mail list and just received some interesting news. I don’t think they’ll mind me posting it here:
Aside from these developments state side, the parent company of The Weather Network has submitted an application for a new TV channel, The Environment Network. This channel will broadcast environmentally related content exclusively, 24 hours a day.
In order to help push this application through, letters of support need to
be sent to the CRTC by November 15, 07.
Details regarding the letter can be found at
http://www.theweathernetwork.com/index.php?product=environmentnetwork&pagecontent=index#draftletter
Thanks
Jed Goldberg
President
Earth Day Canada
Sounds like a GREAT idea to me! Hopefully this comes to fruition

On a more serious note (as compared to my Blog Action Day post, that is) – I just wanted to let everyone know about an upcoming CNN documentary called “Planet in Peril”, which will be airing next Tuesday and Wednesday (October 23 and 24). Above is a 24 minute exerpt from the documentary and it is sobering to say the least. You’ll learn about the illegal animal trade in Thailand and toxic water pollution in China.
Here is an overview of the documentary as a whole:
Planet in Peril uses first-hand investigative reporting to provide a better understanding of the environment’s present state. Bringing viewers the stories behind the statistics, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Animal Planet host and wildlife biologist Jeff Corwin will focus on four main issues that threaten the planet and its inhabitants: climate change, deforestation, species loss and overpopulation. Planet in Peril, filmed across four continents and 13 countries, airs over two nights on CNN/U.S. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, and Wednesday, Oct. 24, from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. (ET/PT) and globally on CNN International.
[EDIT]: For whatever reason I’m not able to embed the video in the blog. I’ll be honest, this sort of thing REALLY irks me! How are we supposed to get the message out when companies are so protective of their work?
Anyway – I still HIGHLY recommend you check out the video – access it here: Planet In Peril

I am indeed the ultimate master of procrastination!
I first heard about Blog Action Day back in the middle of August. I planned to join and to write about it here right away – didn’t happen. Rather ironic, given the name of the event, don’t you think?
I watched as more and more people made mention of it, yet for whatever reason I still did not take the time to write a post about it.
Oh, and did I mention the fact that this year’s topic is “The Environment”?
Anyway, for whatever reason today I decided I had better sign up and get something posted here! Only a few days to go!
Just in case anyone is not familiar with Blog Action Day, here is some info from the site:
On October 15th – Blog Action Day, bloggers around the web will unite to put a single important issue on everyone’s mind.
In its inaugural year, Blog Action Day will be co-ordinating bloggers to tackle the issue of the environment.
What Each Blogger Will Do
Bloggers can participate on Blog Action Day in one of two ways:
1. Publish a post on their blog which relates to an issue of their own choice pertaining to the environment.
For example: A blog about money might write about how to save around the home by using environmentally friendly ideas. Similarly a blog about politics might examine what weight environmental policy holds in the political arena.
Posts do not need to have any specific agenda, they simply need to relate to the larger issue in whatever way suits the blogger and readership. Our aim is not to promote one particular viewpoint, only to push the issue to the table for discussion.
2. Commit to donating their day’s advertising earnings to an environmental charity of their choice. There is a list of “official” Blog Action Day charities on the site, however bloggers are also free to choose an alternate environmental charity to donate to if they wish.
So there you have it! If you have a blog and have not yet signed up, there is still time!
Now I just need to make sure I don’t procrastinate when it comes to writing my Blog Action Post on the 15th! Haha!

We recently received this msg in an email – sounded interesting so I thought I’d post it here (I added the image)
For the third year in a row, the Yves Rocher Foundation is launching its Women of the Earth contest. This contest offers three prizes for a total of 15 000$, to women who are making every effort to make this world a greener place with their exemplary project. The first place winner will receive $7,000, the second place $5,000 and the third place $3,000 for their respective projects.
Help us find women who are working to protect the environment so that we can recognize them and they can inspire others to do their part. Application forms can be downloaded at: http://pictures.yvesrocher.com/US/terre/index_en_ca.html
The deadline to return them is September 30, 2007.
The first place Canadian winner will also compete with winners from other participating countries around the world for the chance to win an additional 10,000 euros for her project during a special ceremony held on International Woman’s Day, in Paris, France.
Amanda Vincent, co-founder and director of Project Seahorse won the first Canadian prize last year. In close collaboration with local populations in Asia, Europe and America, Project Seahorse’s activities encompass conducting studies on seahorses, establishing protected marine areas, managing fisheries, supporting communities and changing trade practices. Through the organization’s actions, practical solutions that lead to sustainable management of the oceans are being discovered.
About Women of the Earth Contest
Today, the contest is held in 10 countries and the goal is to create a global competition that will recognize and celebrate the conservation efforts of women worldwide. Over the past five years, 95 women throughout the world have been honoured and have received bursaries from the Foundation.

Just a quick follow-up to a post I wrote at the end of January. I received word from Peter Schmalfeldt (president) today that Gigoit is now officially available in Canada and the UK (was only available in US previously)!
Not surprisingly, there doesn’t seem to be all that much available in Canada at the moment, but I suspect that as word gets out and people sign up it will grow quite quickly.
I definitely can see myself preferring Gigoit over Freecycle – I made the mistake of signing up for Freecycle email notifications and ended up utterly annoyed with all the emails (although it was at least heartwarming to see so much ‘freecyling’ going on in my region). I also didn’t find the user interface all that much fun to work with.
That being said, I think both these services are fantastic and I really hope to see more people using them in coming months and years!
