There’s no doubt that the Worldwide Web has revolutionized our ability to share and obtain information. One of the downsides of surfing the web, however – even with with Google’s increasingly powerful search algorithm – is that it can be a fairly tiring experience at times. Very often, you need to visit a number of different sites in order to find sufficient information on a given topic. As such, it’s always nice to come across a resource that is absolutely jam-packed with top quality, relevant information!
As you probably know by now, we just love telling you about these sorts of resources!
I actually came across Oasis Design not long after we started EcoSherpa and even added them to our directory – but as is often the case, I made a mental note to explore the site further and well…you know what happens from there.
For whatever reason they popped into my head again today so I decided to pay them a visit and write this long-overdue post. The timing of the mind ‘pop’ was actually very good due to my increased focus and interest re: household water management. If you visit the Oasis site you will see that this is clearly a topic they know a great deal about! In fact this seems to be their primary focus. That being said, you will also find a decent amount of info relating to ecological design and sustainable living in general.
I should probably mention that a fair amount of their info (in the form of articles and books) is for sale, but definitely don’t let that scare you off! There is a wealth of free info, and the products for sale look to be excellent resources.
A little more about Oasis (from the site):
Oasis Design is a wellspring of original content and designs which you won’t find elsewhere. We specialize in the nuts and bolts of sustainability—practical systems for living well, in harmony with nature and each other. These include designs for managing water, wastewater, energy, money and other resources. Our goal is to live really well, on a small amount of well-managed resources, and help others do the same. We don’t need resource wars…we just need to make the most of our fair share. There are several hundred pages of free information here on our web site, as well as an additional several hundred in our books and articles.

Wow, I have been really slipping lately with the website. I send out my apologies to our readers and especially Bentley. I have been extremely busy these past few weeks with my full-time job. Over the past month I have been busy growing my marketing agency and unfortunately it has left very little time for other projects. The good news is that we are moving into our new office this week and my schedule will be returning back to normal within a few weeks. Once again, thanks Bentley for all of your efforts with the website!
I was surfing around the Internet this morning, and came across a link to Big Picture TV. Big Picture TV is a website that provides free streaming video clips of world-renowned thinkers and experts in fields relating to environmental and social sustainability. Some of the clips include, Nelson Mandela, the Prince of Wales, Annie Lennox and Nobel prize-winning Kenyan environmentalist Wanagari Maathai.
What I like most about the website is that they look at global problems (climate change, species loss, poverty, etc) from a positive context and also try to provide solutions to these problems. The site is inline with our website and that we try not to look at the doom and gloom side of things. We prefer to look at the solutions and innovations that can help us lead more sustainable lives.
Big Picture TV is a fully independent video channel offering solution-oriented commentary on the critical issues of our time. A distinguished advisory board helps to shape our video archive and to identify relevant authorities. Big Picture TV offers these authorities a media platform where they can share their views and ideas with a growing international audience.
The depth of their knowledge and experience gives our contributing speakers the ability to examine the causes of societal or environmental problems and point to practical solutions. Certain speakers have expertise in a specialist field or are active in the support of a particular project or campaign. Others address the big picture by stressing cross-sector or inter-disciplinary connections. All of our contributors, however, offer insight and analysis that is accessible to viewers of all ages.
Head over to the website and have a look for yourself. You won’t be disappointed! The website is easy to navigate, a clean design and most importantly, full of information and videos. I had a chance to view, Julia Butterfly Hill’s video, “A World of Solution”, and I highly recommend that all of our readers take five minutes out of their day to view the video. What do you have to lose? You might actually feel inspired to take action in your own community. To quote Julia, “Let’s stop talking and let’s just do it!”.
