Composter’s Log - Dontchu Know I’m Loco?!

Usually when I call myself ‘crazy‘, I’m simply referring to my off-beat sense of humor (think Adam Sandler’s ‘Crazy Spoon-Head’) and overall excitable, goofy nature.
The nickname however has officially taken on new meaning - something much closer to the dictionary definition!
Not only must my neighbors think I’m completely off my rocker (”Oh look Irene, it’s that poor man out taking pictures of his wooden box again!”), but I actually KNOW I must be crazy!
After all, what sane person would go outside when the temperature is close to minus 30 C (minus 22F) - with wind chill - and deposit food scraps into a partially frozen worm bin?!
So yeah, in case you hadn’t guessed, my ‘extravaganza’ is borderline ‘extravagonzo’!
The top several inches of material are frozen solid, and the highest temperature I could find down below was in the range of 5C/41F, even AFTER adding horse manure and LOTS of rich organic matter last week.
So where do we go from here?
Only two options the way I see it - 1) I launch a serious offensive, working like a madman to bring some warmth back to the bin (I wonder if my wife would let me use her hair dryer outside?… Ok, I’m kidding…sort of). OR
2) I make my bin into a heaping snow mountain, and wait till spring to venture outside again.
To be honest, I’m leaning towards #2. As fun and interesting as this experiment has been, it’s been a bit of a time-hog and will only require more dedication if I have any hope of getting things back on track.
Add to that the fact that milder weather can’t be too far off!
Anyway, I’m going to give it a few more days of thought and will go from there. Should I decide to throw in the towel, I will be sure to write a post-mortem discussing what I’ve learned and perhaps how I would do things differently next time.
Stay tuned!
