6 Degree Energy Efficiency Challenge

We received an e-mail the other day from Gadi, of SixDegreeChallenge.org, informing us about the “6° of Energy Efficiency Challenge“.
I really appreciate hearing about these sorts of things, since it can be difficult to stay up to date with ALL the cool eco stuff going on in the world (although my ‘Better World Homepage’ is hopefully going to help with that).
Anyway, here is Gadi’s original email:
The site, 6° of Energy Efficiency Challenge (http://www.sixdegreechallenge.org), has been covered on blogs like TreeHugger and Pangaya–to date, nearly 10,000 people have stepped up to the site’s Energy Efficiency Challenge.
The new site demonstrates the important connections between our individual energy decisions and the world’s environment, economy and security. The Alliance to Save Energy, the American Gas Association (AGA), The Dow Chemical Company Inc., and 27 additional Power is in Your Hands partners have based this new site on those well-known concepts, “6° of separation” and the “butterfly effect.” Accordingly, 6° of Energy Efficiency highlights the surprising interconnectedness of all things— families, communities, states, countries and beyond.
In addition to listing easy cost-cutting, energy-saving tips, http://www.sixdegreechallenge.org illustrates the interconnectedness of individuals for the greater good and empowers Americans to make simple changes to their homes and vehicles that can save them money. The site also rewards those who take the Challenge with a discount on an energy-efficient product.
People like you and your readers represent a growing faction of those committed to curbing wasteful energy use— people whose collective small steps are making a big difference. We’d really appreciate your help to spread the word. Don’t hesitate to keep in touch if you have any other comments or questions; I’m happy to help. Please also let me know if you decide to share information about 6° of Energy Efficiency Challenge with your readers or take the challenge for
yourself!Gadi.
I encourage everyone to check out the site if you have not already done so. And more importantly, commit yourself to the challenge! It starts with a fun little quiz (5 out of 6 right! Whoohoo!), followed by a pledge to take AT LEAST one responsible action (there are six totally-doable options listed). Next you tell six friends about the challenge (by sending them an email), and voila you will be elligible for a discount on energy-efficient products (seems to be only good for certain Target store products, but don’t let that stop you from taking part).
One of the hurdles many of us must cross in the pursuit of ‘making a difference’ is this transition from talking about taking action to the point of actually taking action. I think a campaign like this is great because it’s easy and fun, but still forces you to do more than simply nod your head and mentally commit to doing something later.
