Self-Sufficientish – ‘The Urban Guide To Almost Self-Sufficiency’

There is no doubt that high quality content is very important when it comes to creating a successful website. Of course, one great way to draw people in to see your quality content is to come up with a catchy name!

When I first came across Self Sufficient ‘ish’ a few weeks ago it was in fact the interesting name that made me want to read more. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice site with lot’s of easy-to-find info, but there was just something about the name!

I think I like it so much because it adds a very human quality to the site – clearly these are individuals who don’t feel the need to take life TOO seriously! Add to that the picture of the friendly-looking webmasters on the homepage, and you’ve got yourself a very welcoming site.

Self Sufficient ‘ish’ is the work of Dave and Andy Hamilton (from the UK, I believe), two brothers with a passion for low-impact, self-sufficient living.

Here is an excerpt from their personal philosophy section:

The idea behind self-sufficientish-ism is although many of us would love to live on a farm, grow all our own food, brew pea pod wine, live the ‘Good-Life’. Not all of us have the means the space or are perhaps unwilling to give it all up and suffer the highs and lows of going it alone on a smallholding.

Although total self-sufficiency is appealing the thought of giving up the little luxuries in life may not be. I grow a lot of my own food eat wild foods and when I have the money buy organic fruit and vegetables but I still enjoy beer in a pub and like to go to the cinema or eat out occasionally.

Self Sufficientish-ism has created for these reasons. It is for all those who have limited time, space or money but would like to have a go at growing their own food or brewing their own alcohol or want to know which wild foods are good to eat. We also aim to offer advice on a whole host of other subjects from a low-ecological impact perspective.

Their overall philosophy seems to be quite similar to ours here at EcoSherpa. Obviously not that many people are yet ready to give up all the luxuries of modern life in the name of earth-friendly living, BUT that doesn’t mean we can’t start down that path and encourage others to do so as well.

I haven’t had the chance to really surf around the site yet, but it definitely looks like there are lots of interesting articles covering a wide range of topics. I hope to spend a little more time looking around in the near future.

So there you have it folks! If you are at all interested in the topic of self-sufficiency I highly recommend you check out Self Sufficient ‘ish’

2007 Travellerspoint Calendar

Travellerspoint 2007 Calendar

We recieved an e-mail from Eric Daams (travellerspoint.com) today and I thought it would be good to share it on the blog:

“I’d like to introduce our Travellerspoint 2007 Calendar to your readers. We
found out about a great little organisation by the name of Green WiFi a few
months ago, who deliver solar-powered, internet-connected computers to remote
rural communities. When we decided to make a calendar this year, it made sense
to donate the profits to Green WiFi.

The calendar features 12 of the best member photos uploaded on Travellerspoint.
Each photo also doubles as a postcard and when the months are over, these can be
sent to friends or stuck on the fridge to enjoy as long as you’d like. A bit of
re-use doesn’t go astray :-)

Naturally, we would like to promote this calendar (and the cause it represents)
as much as possible before Christmas. If you would be able to make a mention of
it, it would be much appreciated! All profits from the calendar will support a
Green WiFi project.”

Here is the press release from the Travellerspoint website:

The 2007 Travellerspoint calendar is on sale, featuring stunning travel photography from Travellerspoint members. The 12 images, hand-picked in a member vote, represent a small sampling of the 40 000 + travel photos featured on Travellerspoint. The calendar, designed by Boris Iochev, doubles as a set of 12 postcards, a unique feature which will benefit any traveller or armchair explorer.

All profits from sales will go to delivering internet-connected computers to remote rural communities. Green WiFi in partnership with Inveneo provides solar powered internet access and communications to communities in developing areas where electric power is nonexistent or unreliable. Green WiFi was founded on the belief that the welfare of the world depends on providing the 3 billion people living in these conditions with access to the world’s information.

I had a chance to check out the site myself and the photos are beautiful. The profits are all going towards a great cause so definitely be sure to check it out: 2007 Travellerspoint Calendar
