‘Beaming Bioneers’ Behemoth 2006

Bioneers

Don’t ya just love alliteration?

Ok, all silliness aside – in case you haven’t heard, this weekend all across the US the Bioneers are holding their annual conference.
“Who the heck are the Bioneers?” some might ask.
Here is a blurb from their website:

The Collective Heritage Institute, aka Bioneers, was founded in 1990, when Kenny Ausubel and Nina Simons assembled Bioneers for the first annual Bioneers conference, a gathering of scientific and social innovators who have demonstrated visionary and practical models for restoring the Earth and communities.

Bioneers was conceived to conduct programs in the conservation of biological and cultural diversity, traditional farming practices, and environmental restoration. Our vision of environment encompasses the natural landscape, cultivated landscape, biodiversity, cultural diversity, watersheds, community economics, and spirituality. Bioneers seeks to unite nature, culture and spirit in an Earth-honoring vision, and create economic models founded in social justice.

Here are the 18 locations where conferences are being held:
Anchorage, AK
Atlanta, GA
Bloomington, IN
Boulder, CO
Bozeman, MT
Brigham City, UT
Carbondale, IL
Detroit, MI
Eugene, OR
Flagstaff, AZ
Honolulu, HI
Houston, TX
Logan, UT
Marion, MA
Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN
Taos, NM
Traverse City, MI
Vernal, UT

And here is the page where you can find all the info: http://beaming.bioneers.org/

If you have any interest in sustainable living etc and happen to live within driving distance of any of these locations you might want to check out one of these conferences!

Eco-Entrepreneurship and Making New Friends…

It’s certainly been an interesting day! Earlier I just HAPPENED to stumble across a post at Sustainablog that mentioned a new chat group starting up for people interested in eco-entrepreneurship (called ‘The Super Cool Eco-Entrepreneurs Club’). Sounded great to me – we haven’t really connected with any like-minded (super cool) people so it seemed like a great opportunity to make some new friends and share ideas. For anyone who is interested btw, the group is being organized by Shea Gunther – I’m pretty sure he is still welcoming newcomers. Just fire him an email to let him know you are interested. I think the next chat session is in two weeks time (Oct 29th-ish?).

While I was on Shea’s site I saw mention of another group for people interested in Green Business – GreenBusiness.Net – “An Online Community for Eco Entrepreneurs”. I know I have seen the site before, but unfortunately hadn’t really taken the time to see what they were all about. This time I spent some more time on the site and even signed up for a membership!

I must say it looks like a fantastic resource. The forum appears to be very active, and there is a lot of interesting info there! if you have any interest in green business I would highly recommend joining! I had an email exchange with Jason Trout (the founder) and he seems like a really cool guy as well.

Oh…another interesting find from today (actually saw it mentioned on the Green Business forum) – a new social networking site starting up, devoted to eco-conscious people. Its called Common Circle and it seems pretty cool at first glance. Its still in the beta testing stage, but it seems to be gaining popularity.

Aside from feeling pretty excited about these new resources I’ve found, I’ve also been blown away by how friendly everyone we’ve met thus far has been! I guess its not TOO surprising that people who have a great deal of respect for the earth would also tend to be pretty nice people…hmmmm. Interesting – maybe someone should conduct a study! :-)

Anyway, we’re definitely looking forward to making more friends in the green blogosphere!!

Green Roofs Save Greenbacks

Green Roof

Just read an interesting article at MSNBC about green roofs in Chicago. Five years ago Chicago City Hall installed a 20,000 sq ft beauty. Sounds pretty cool. Apparently the new roof has already resulted in $25,000 in energy savings!
I knew they were great for stormwater control (the article mentions rooftop plants being able reduce stormwater by 60%) but didn’t realize they had such an impact on energy savings!

Mention of green roofs even being installed on some dog houses made me chuckle a little – but it also piqued my curiosity! A search for ‘dog house with a green roof’ on Google led me to this interesting article: DIY green “roof-roof” for Fido, which provides instructions for how to construct your very own dog house green roof!

Here is an image linked from the site:

Who says pets can’t be environmentalists too? :-)
