Interesting article in the latest Springwise newsletter about “reverse vending machines”, created via a partnership between Stirlingshire Vending and Reverse Vending Corporation in the UK.
As the name implies (well sorta), these machines accept empty beverage containers - essentially serving as a souped-up version of the Household Recycling Plant we talked about a little while ago.
Sounds great to me! I’m constantly frustrated by the lack of public recycling bins.
Hopefully we’ll see much more of this sort of thing before too long!

I just finished my nightly Internet surfing when I came across the EcoContribution website. If you haven’t been to the website before, go take a look and help their cause.
EcoContribution is a grassroots website dedicated to environmental protection. They strive to bring it about by combining information campaigns and political action.
You can help their campaigns by signing a petition asking government to act on issues that they feel can make a great difference. People are invited to take action at different levels; at home, by informing the people around them or by getting involved with them.
One of their current campaigns is, All Shrimp are not equal.
All Shrimp are not equal is a campaign to inform people of the harmful effects of warmwater shrimp fishing. Warmwater shrimp represents only 2% of the world’s fish catch. Yet it is responsible for one third of the bycatch, with a rate of 10 to 1; for every pound of tropical shrimp, 10 pounds of bycatch must die.
On the contrary, Coldwater shrimp fishing in Canada is one of the most environmentally-friendly practices in the world. The purpose of this campaign is to inform consumers of the difference between coldwater and warmwater shrimp and the actions you can take to help stop this environmental carnage. By the same token, you will be encouraging the Canadian Shrimp Fishery. To learn more about this campaign, visit Ecocontribution.

Do you want to be noticed on the road?
If you answered yes, then the car for you is the Eclectic car from Venturi of France.
According to the company’s website, “this is not an ordinary car, but an avant-garde way of getting from one place to another by exchanging one’s role as a “consumer” for that of a “producer” and this, in the general interest.” They further mention that the Eclectic, is the first autonomous vehicle in the history of the automobile. Its low energy consumption makes it the most economical environmental vehicle ever built. The concept behind the Eclectic is awesome and I hope that their business model is successful. I am sure their designs and technology will inspire others to create new vehicles as well.
Out of all the new cars I have seen over the past few months the Eclectic is definitely the most unique looking. It looks like it has come straight out of a sci-fi movie. The Eclectic is the first solar production car and has the ability to recharge its last generation NiMH (NIV-7) batteries using wind generation.

I was doing some research on solar energy today and came across an interesting link to The Ann Arbor, Michigan “Mow with Less” program. The website lists the process involved in converting a 24-volt cordless electric mower to solar power. I thoroughly went through the article and it is a fantastic method of converting an electric mower to solar.
We all know that mowing our lawns in North America using a gas powered mower creates an enormous amount of air pollution. According to the article, the average lawn in the United States creates as much air pollution as driving the family car on a 200 mile trip. As well, cutting the lawn with a gas powered mower creates excess noise pollution.
Simply switching to an electric mower will help eliminate the air pollution and help reduce much of the noise pollution. But with the increase in solar technology, it is now possible to run an electric mower on renewable energy, the sun. I remind everyone that there is a disclaimer for the manual as it is intended for skillful individuals with abilities in electrical repair. As noted in the manual, “Any work with electricity and mowing equipment is potentially dangerous with possibilities of shock, fire, or dismemberment.”
If you feel like you are up for the challenge visit the following link. I am sure before too long commercial solar powered lawn mowers will readily available at your local garden retailer. One company, Free Power Systems is already offering a solar charging lawnmower, called the Sun Whisper.
